Kalamazoo, MI- Taking full advantage of playing on home ice, the Kalamazoo Wings netted four on their way to a one-goal victory against the Florida Everblades. The victory gives Kalamazoo a 2-1 series lead in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals and a opportunity to close out the series Saturday night at Wings Stadium.
Keeping with the trend in the series of pressuring the Everblades in the opening period, Andrew Fournier (1st) scored on a wraparound 4:34 into the contest. Earning assists on the goal were Wes O’Neill and Trent Daavettila.
Daavettila, who leads the K-Wings in postseason scoring with four points (1 goal, 3 assists) is on a three-game playoff scoring streak.
Tied for second in the ECHL during the regular season in shorthanded goals, the Everblades took the postseason lead in that category 16:45 into the first period notching their second of the playoffs with a rebound shorthander from Mathieu Roy (1st) to knot the contest at 1-1.
Storming out of the locker room, Kalamazoo lit the lamp twice in the first 1:27 of the period to take a two-goal lead. Sam Ftorek found Daavettila (2nd) on the backdoor 27 seconds into the period to give the K-Wings a 2-1 advantage.
Exactly one-minute later, Justin Taylor (1st) one-timed a pass from Brandon Svendsen over the shoulder of Mike Zacharias to give the K-Wings their largest lead of the night.
Keeping the puck in the K-Wings zone, Florida responded midway in the period, with a tally marker Bobby Raymond (1st).
Pulling even early in the third period, Florida’s Brad Snetsinger (1st) tied the game at 3-3 scoring the equalizer on the power-play 4:08 in the period.
Kalamazoo reclaimed the lead for good four and a half minutes later, when Brady Leisenring’s (1st) quick wrister along the right-wing boards beat Zacharias through his five-hole. Assisting on the goal were Patrick Asselin and Corey Syvret. After not earning a point in the regular season in 28 games, Syvret earned his first point of the season.
