Estero, FL- Defending their home ice, the Florida Everblades held off the Kalamazoo Wings for a 2-1 victory Tuesday night at the Germain Arena to take a one-game to none lead in their Eastern Conference best-of-five match-up.
Swarming over the Everblades in the opening 20 minutes, the K-Wings outshot Florida 13-5 in the period, but neither team was able to reach the back of the net.
After weathering the K-Wings storm in the first period, the Everblades made some noise scoring twice in the middle stanza.
Deflecting a Brad Snetsinger centering pass, Ross Carlson (1st) scored the first goal of the series 8:48 into the period.
After stripping the puck away in the neutral zone and while killing off a penalty, Matt Beca (1st) raced up the right wing and beat Ryan Nie of his left hip to record the shorthanded tally with 4:30 remaining in the second period.
Including the regular season, the K-Wings, who ranked second in the ECHL with fewest shorthanded goals allowed will four during the season, have allowed three shorties against the ‘Blades.
Trying to mount a comeback in the third period, Kalamazoo cut Florida’s lead in half 6:12 into the period with a power-play tally from Trent Daavettila (1st).
Moments later, the K-Wings thought they tied the game with an equalizer from Andrew Fournier; however the goal would be disallowed for goaltending interference.
Kalamazoo mustered a few more chances down the stretch, but Bobby Goepfert (31 saves) would turn them side to record the victory.
