Kalamazoo, MI-The Kalamazoo Wings, proud member of the ECHL and affiliate of the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League, announce that the team has concluded its agreement to be the ECHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks.
Under the affiliation arrangement, during the 2009-10 season, San Jose assigned players to Kalamazoo. Also, as an affiliate of the Sharks, the K-Wings were also associated with their American Hockey League club, the Worcester Sharks.
“We (San Jose Sharks) had a terrific partnership with the Kalamazoo Wings last season,” said Wayne Thomas, vice president and assistant general manager of the San Jose Sharks. “However, the opportunity to have an affiliation in Stockton (CA) that is geographically and economically beneficial was hard to pass up. I would like to thank the entire Wings organization, the fans, and Nick Bootland for an outstanding job with our prospects in Kalamazoo last season. The San Jose Sharks wish the Kalamazoo Wings nothing but great things next year.”
Last year, six members of the Sharks organization, played for the K-Wings. All of those players spent a part of the season in Worcester.
“The Sharks are a first-class organization and we understand their decision to move in a different direction,” said Paul L. Pickard, president of the Wings Stadium Complex and the Kalamazoo Wings. “In the past, we have worked with the Sharks both as an affiliate and with a working agreement and we would like to thank the Sharks organization, especially the efforts of Wayne Thomas for making it a successful partnership.”
