Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings, proud member of the ECHL and affiliate of the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League, announce that the team has concluded its agreement to be the ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Under the affiliation arrangement, during the 2009-10 season, Philadelphia assigned players to Kalamazoo. Also, with being an affiliate of the Flyers, the K-Wings were also associated with the Flyers American Hockey League club, the Adirondack Phantoms.
During their affiliation, the Flyers met with director of hockey operations/head coach Nick Bootland during the NHL Draft last year in Montreal. Bootland also attended the Flyers rookie camp and AHL training camp.
“We (K-Wings) are extremely appreciative of everything the Flyers organization has done for us to be successful during our inaugural ECHL season; however, we feel it is in the best interest or our organization and our fans that we move in another direction,” said Paul L. Pickard, president of the Wings Stadium Complex and the Kalamazoo Wings. “The Flyers are a very successful organization and it was a great experience to be their ECHL affiliate.”
Last year, two members of the Flyers organization, Jeremy Duchesne and David Sloane played for the K-Wings. Both players were called-up to the AHL and Duchesne became the first K-Wings player since 1999-00 to play with Kalamazoo and in the NHL in the same season.
