Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings, proud member of the ECHL, announce there 72-game schedule for the upcoming 2009-2010 season.
The K-Wings regular season will run from October 16th-April 3rd. All 20 of the member clubs in the ECHL will play 72 games (36 home and 36 away).
Kalamazoo will start the season on the road against the Reading Royals on Thursday, October 15th. The contest is slated to be the first game in the 2009-10 campaign for the entire ECHL.
The K-Wings home opener will occur the following Saturday, October 24th, versus the Reading Royals.
The next week, a tradition will continue, as the K-Wings host the Toledo Walleye during the 6th Annual Orange Ice Game. Fans are encouraged to dress in costumes and participate in Halloween festivities. The Orange Ice clash will be the first of five premium night games on the K-Wings’ schedule.
“It was imperative for us (K-Wings) to continue all of our colored ice (Orange, Golden, Green and Pink) and New Year’s Eve traditions,” said Wade Welsh, general manager. “These games have become a mainstay of K-Wings hockey and we appreciate the effort of the ECHL in working with us to keep them on our schedule.”
Other game highlights include Thursday, December 31st when the K-Wings host the Cincinnati Cyclones during the 8th Annual New Year’s Eve Bash, Saturday, January 30th versus Cincinnati during the 2nd Annual McDonald’s Golden Ice Game and Sunday, February 14th versus Toledo during the 10th Annual Pink Ice Game.
One of the most historic traditions in hockey will continue on Wednesday, March 17th, when the Wheeling Nailers visit Wings Stadium for the 29th Annual World Famous Fifth-Third Bank “Green Ice” Game.
This year, the K-Wings will be celebrating their 36th season of professional hockey and first in the ECHL, which features coast-to-coast hockey with 20 teams in 15 states and British Columbia. Kalamazoo will play 11 of the league’s 20 teams, including teams from the South Division.
While the K-Wings usually play a majority of their contests in the new year, this season, the K-Wings will host 17 games at Wings Stadium before January 1st.
“With events like the U.S. Curling National Championships coming to Wings Stadium in March, we had to move some home games to the beginning part of our schedule,” said Welsh. “Our schedule also will give our fans an opportunity to get acquainted with a variety of opponents.”
The two teams the K-Wings battle the most this year are the Cyclones (15 games, 8 home and 7 away) and the Walleye (13 games, 7 home and 6 away). While not at Wings Stadium, the K-Wings will face-off twice against the Kelly Cup champions, the South Carolina Stingray.
A complete schedule of K-Wings games for the 2009-2010 season is attached to this press release.
