Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings, proud member of the International Hockey League, announce two members of their front office staff were recognized during the league’s Annual Front Office Awards.
Earlier this afternoon, the IHL named Wade Welsh its General Manager of the Year. Welsh earns the award in his first season as K-Wings General Manager.
Proven to be one of the top young executives in hockey, Welsh is in his fourth full season with the organization and first as General Manager. During the past three years, Welsh has served as the franchise’s Assistant General Manager.
In his tenure with the K-Wings, Welsh played a vital role in every aspect of the K-Wings operations, and the organization has continued to show increases in corporate, group and season ticket sales.
Before coming to Kalamazoo, Welsh spent a year and a half with the Missouri River Otters as the team’s Assistant General Manager.
Having an integral role in running the K-Wings, Welsh brings leadership and a vast sales knowledge to his position. Welsh has sports selling experience in hockey, with the Quad City Mallards, and in baseball, with the Joliet JackHammers of the Northern League. With Joliet, Wade helped build the JackHammers from the ground up, as he was part of the team’s inaugural staff.
Also honored by the league this afternoon was Mike Modugno, who was named Broadcaster of the Year. This is the fourth front office award Modugno has received since coming to Kalamazoo and his first in the IHL. During the 2003-04 season, Modugno was honored as the Broadcaster of the Year and earned Public Relations Director of the Year Awards in 2004-05 and 2006-07.
Governors and general managers selected the General Manager of the Year, while the six broadcasters from the IHL’s member clubs selected the Broadcaster of the Year. .
The IHL will present the awards to Welsh and Modugno on April 12th during the K-Wings regular season finale, when they host the Port Huron Icehawks at 7:30 p.m. on Fan Appreciation Night.
After five days off and completing a three-game road trip, Kalamazoo will return to Wings Stadium to start a two-game home stand on Friday, April 4th versus the Flint Generals at 7:30 p.m. Friday’s contest coincides with Team Poster Night presented by The Maurer Group, Fed-Ex Kinko’s and WRKR, as well as the final “Flashback Friday” featuring K-Wings IHL alum, Mark Lawrence.
On Saturday (4/5), the K-Wings will remain at Wings Stadium to entertain the Port Huron Icehawks at 7:30 p.m. on Qdoba Night. Following the game, Kalamazoo will auction off their blue jerseys.
The K-Wings will finish the week on Sunday, April 6th with a visit to the U.S. Cellular Coliseum to battle the Bloomington PrairieThunder at 4 p.m. (CST).
Single game tickets for the entire K-Wings 2007-08 home schedule are currently on sale at the Wings Stadium Ticket Office. Tickets range from $9-$14. Fans are encouraged to purchase their game tickets in advance, as they will save $1 per ticket by getting their seats prior to a game day.
