Game Rewind

Wednesday, January 30th vs. Muskegon (Kalamazoo 4-Muskegon 2)

Kalamazoo, MI- Needing a victory to move into a fourth place tie with the Muskegon Fury, the Kalamazoo Wings  received early offense and strong goaltending throughout to defeat the Fury 4-2.

Skating off to a good start, the K-Wings grabbed an early advantage registering twice in the opening period.  Ryan Markham (3rd) lit the lamp 8:30 into the period with a wrist shot from the slot to give Kalamazoo a 1-0 lead.

Building on the momentum nearly four minutes later, Glenn Detulleo (11th) extended the K-Wings lead by sending a backhander past the outreached glove hand of Muskegon’s Clayton Pool.

Muskegon’s Dan Riedel (14th) cut the K-Wings lead to 2-1 with a slap shot from between the circles 15:28 into the second period.

While on the power-play, Kalamazoo answered back over a minute later with a blast from the circle from Jamie Vanderveeken (7th). The goal from Vanderveeken, besides being his first game-winner, was his fifth on the power-play and ties him with Flint’s Nick Tuzzolino for the league lead among defensemen.

Ten seconds after Vanderveeken gave the K-Wings a two-goal advantage at 3-1, Adam Bartholomey (7th) tipped the puck past Kalamazoo goaltender Brad Smith to cut the Fury deficit to a single goal.

Kalamazoo put the contest out of reach early in the third, as Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn slid the puck five-hole past Pool. Assisting on the goal was Detulleo, who his 300th career point on the helper.

Smith stopped 34 shots to earn the victory to raise his record 4-6-0-1. The win also raises the K-Wings current win streak to three games, which is one game shy of tying the team’s season high.

Friday, February 1st  @ Port Huron (Port Huron 3-Kalamazoo 1)

Port Huron, MI- Two goals 14 seconds apart in the second period was enough for Port Huron, as the Icehawks hung on to defeat the Kalamazoo Wings 3-1 Friday night at McMorran Place Arena

With a good flow in the opening period neither team was able to register on the scoreboard. Kalamazoo had the better of the scoring chances, out shooting Port Huron 8-7 in the first.

Using two goals in a span of 14 seconds, Port Huron took a 2-0 lead over Kalamazoo. Taking advantage of a turnover behind the net, Jeff Zehr found Jamie Carroll (18th) in front 5:35 into the second. Moments later, Neil Clark (1st), in his first game back from an AHL call-up, scored to extend the Icehawks lead.

Later in the period, Glenn Detulleo (12th) knocked in a power-play rebound to cut Kalamazoo’s deficit to a single goal.

A defensive battle in the final period became out of reach for Kalamazoo in the waning moments, when Port Huron’s Chris Bogas (2nd) sent the puck into the empty net to give the Icehawks a 3-1 victory.

Saturday February 2nd vs. Fort Wayne (Fort Wayne 5-Kalamazoo 2)

Kalamazoo, MI- In a physical game that had the atmosphere of playoff hockey, it was the Fort Wayne Komets that used a three-goal output in the second period to defeat the Kalamazoo Wings 5-2 at Wings Stadium.

Bringing the crowd of 3,552 to its feet just 3:18 into the contest, Dan Carney’s shot from the left point was deflected by Travis Granbois (6th) and past Komets goaltender Nick Boucher.

Midway in the period, Luciano Aquino knotted the game at 1-1 with a slap shot from the slot. Three minutes later on a breakaway, Glenn Detulleo hooked Fort Wayne’s Mathieu Curadeau to the ice, which lead to a penalty shot. Curadeau (21st) took advantage of the most exciting play in hockey giving the Komets their first lead of the night.

Answering back moments later, Nick Bootland (26th) recorded the equalizer on his IHL leading 12th power-play tally of the season.

Fort Wayne took the game over in the second, scoring three times, including the eventual game-winner from David Hukalo (9th) at the 6:47 mark of the period. The goal gave Hukalo five game-winners on the season, which ties him with Colin Chaulk and Matt Reynolds for the Komets team lead.

Reynolds (16th) added insurance for the Komets finishing on a two-on-one shorthanded goal. The shorthander was Fort Wayne’s league leading ninth this season.

The Komets concluded the game’s scoring with just over two minutes remaining in the second with a five-on-three power-play strike from P.C. Drouin (7th).

The victory gave the Komets a win in three straight games, while ending the K-Wings two-game Wings Stadium winning streak.
