Game Rewind

Friday, November 9th Vs Bloomington (Kalamazoo 5-Bloomington 2)

Kalamazoo, MI- Led by two first period goals and 28 saves by Jeremy Symington the Kalamazoo Wings skated away with a 5-2 victory over the Bloomington PrairieThunder.

 

Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn put the 3,933 fans in Wings Stadium on their feet by netting his first goal of the season 8:25 into the first period. Less than five minutes later (13:01) Jordan Little’s (1st) shot from the blue line extended the K-Wings lead to 2-0.

 

Bloomington’s Jon Booras brought the PrairieThunder back to within a single-goal concluding the period’s scoring with his team-tying fourth of the season.

 

After no scoring in the second period, Kalamazoo came out flying in the third. Travis Granbois recorded the eventual game-winning tally with 7:20 remaining in regulation, sending a wrist shot past goaltender Loic Lacasse. Putting the contest out of reach, Nick Bootland lit the lamp for his team leading 5th time this season.

 

Jamison Orr (1st) pushed Bloomington back within two goals of Kalamazoo scoring with 1:35 left in the game. In the ensuing face-off, Kalamazoo needed 30 seconds to regain a three-goal lead, as Bootland (6th) knocked in his second goal of the night giving the K-Wings a 5-2 victory.

 

Jeremy Symington recorded his third straight victory for Kalamazoo. With the victory the K-Wings have created a four-way tie for second place in the league.

 

Saturday, November 10th Vs Kalamazoo (Kalamazoo 5-Port Huron 2)

Kalamazoo, MI- Setting the tone early with two goals in first period, Kalamazoo defeated the Port Huron Icehawks 5-2 in front of a crowd of 2,790 at Wings Stadium.

 

On his first shot on North American ice, Matthias Iberer (mah-TEE-is EE-ber-er) tickled the twine with a slap shot from the right circle giving the K-Wings a 1-0 lead. With 27 seconds remaining in the opening period, Kalamazoo’s Jamie Vanderveeken extended his point streak to a K-Wing season high five-games and the lead to 2-0 with a blast from the right point. 

 

Capitalizing on goaltender Marty Magers out of position, Nick Bootland scored his league leading 7th goal of the season 8:26 into the second period. Port Huron received its first goal of the night midway through the second on a tally from Jeff Zehr (4th).

 

Early in the third, Zehr brought the Icehawks back to within a single goal, scoring his second of the night.


For the second straight game, Bootland registered a multi-goal contest, finishing a give and go with Mike Manley midway in the period extending the K-Wings lead to 4-2. Putting the game on ice, Kory Karlander closed out the scoring with a shorthanded empty net tally giving the K-Wings the 5-2 victory.

 

The triumph extends the K-Wings home winning streak to three games and overall win streak to an IHL current high four games.

 

Fast Forward

The K-Wings will wrap-up its four-game home stand this Friday, November 16th with a 7:30 p.m. face-off against arch rival, the Fort Wayne Komets. The contest will also coincide with the first-half of a home and home series between the rivals, which will conclude on Saturday, November 17th with a 7:30 p.m. battle in Fort Wayne. Both teams start the week tied with Port Huron for second place in the IHL and two points behind Flint for first.


Four in a Row

Kalamazoo has won four straight games, including three in a row at Wings Stadium. The four-game overall winning streak is a current high in the IHL and ties the season high set by Port Huron.

Five Alive

Kalamazoo’s Nick Bootland, Kory Karlander and Jamie Vanderveeken are all on five-game point streaks. The five-game streaks are season highs for the K-Wings.

 

Lighting the Lamp

Forward Nick Bootland has been on a scoring tear. Bootland, who leads the league in goals scored with eight, has lit the lamp in an IHL season high four straight games.

 

All in the Family

Last Saturday, the K-Wings signed Matthias Iberer, who is the younger brother of defenseman Florian. The Iberer’s are the fifth set of brothers and sixth overall family connection to play in the same game for the K-Wings in its IHL history.

 

The Obscure Stat of the Week

So far this season, Kalamazoo’s power-play has been at each side of the spectrum. At home, the K-Wings rank sixth in the league with a percentage of 3.3%, while on the road, the K-Wings lead the IHL at 26.3%.
