Expansion Membership approved for Evansville

IceMen join ECHL for 25th Anniversary season in 2012-13

PRINCETON, N.J. – The ECHL on Thursday announced that the Board of Governors has approved the Expansion Membership application of the Evansville IceMen for admission to the ECHL.

Evansville will begin play in October when the Premier ‘AA’ Hockey League celebrates its 25th season, making it the third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League.

Evansville plays its home games at the Ford Center, an 11,000-seat building which opened in November in downtown Evansville. The IceMen have been members of the Central Hockey League for the previous two seasons, and were fourth in the league in attendance in 2011-12 with an average of 4,882 per game.

“The ECHL is pleased to welcome the Evansville IceMen to the League,” said ECHL Commissioner Brian McKenna. “Under the leadership of Ron Geary, the team has developed a strong base of fans. This loyal following, combined with a terrific new arena, make Evansville a strong addition to the ECHL as we celebrate our 25th Anniversary. The IceMen are a welcome addition to our Midwest footprint.”

“The IceMen organization is delighted to become a part of such an outstanding league as the ECHL,” said IceMen Owner/President Ron Geary. “Through their great support and enthusiasm, our growing numbers of loyal and devoted fans have demonstrated how much they want to see a top-flight, quality product. Our step today is another move in that direction. We have come a long way in a short period of time. This is a true testament and tribute to our fans and the Evansville/Tri-State community. We are looking forward to being a member of the ECHL beginning in the league’s 25th

Yeah, can't wait for Wings Stadium to have more Komet fans that Wings fans in it when they play. Nothing like a bunch of out of town trailer parkers to enhance the atmosphere at a game.

Expansion Membership approved for Fort Wayne

ECHL's 25th Anniversary season will have 23 teams

PRINCETON, N.J. – The ECHL announced that the Board of Governors has approved the Expansion Membership application of the Fort Wayne Komets for admission to the ECHL. The addition of the Komets and Evansville IceMen will expand the League to 23 teams for the 25th Anniversary season in 2012-13.

Fort Wayne celebrated its 60th season of professional hockey in 2011-12, and led the Central Hockey League with 7,770 fans per game, marking the 10th consecutive season that the Komets have surpassed 7,000 fans in average attendance. The Komets captured the Presidents’ Cup as Central Hockey League champions in 2011-12, marking the ninth league title in team history. In addition to the CHL championship, Fort Wayne has won seven International Hockey League titles and one United Hockey League championship.

“The ECHL is pleased to welcome the Fort Wayne Komets to the League as we celebrate our 25th Anniversary in the 2012-13 season,” said ECHL Commissioner Brian McKenna. “Having just celebrated the 60th season of professional hockey in Fort Wayne, the Komets bring a history and tradition that is well known in hockey circles. With their strong fan support and history of success, the Komets will be a strong addition to our Midwest geography.”

“The entire Komet organization is looking forward to facing off our first ECHL season this October,” said Komets President Michael Franke. “Having such great nearby regional rivals like Evansville, Toledo, Kalamazoo and Cincinnati will help re-kindle Old Time Komet Hockey.”

With the addition of Evansville and Fort Wayne, along with previously announced expansion teams in Orlando and San Francisco, the ECHL will play with 23 teams in 2012-13, an increase from 20 in the 2011-12 season. The ECHL will announce the 2012-13 schedule in the coming weeks
