West Michigan Speedskating Club

In Kalamazoo, Darcy Sharapova is our extremely accomplished coach.  In 1992 Darcy – who was then known as Darcy Dohnal – won a silver medal in short track speedskating in the Winter Olympics in Albertville, France.

Speedskating is a fast-moving, exciting sport that is the winningest winter Olympic sport in US history.  In short track speedskating there are single races and group races/relays, which are run on a hockey rink.  Races are generally 500, 1000, 1500 and 3000 meters, although shorter and longer races are used as well – mostly for age group competitions and/or relays. While very minor touching between skaters is allowed, contact that results in a fall or interference causes the offending skater to be disqualified.

Speedskating is for all ages and events are held for several age divisions.  The Pony division is for kids age 10 and under and the Masters Division is for skaters 70 and over.  Like auto racing, the name of the game is “go fast, turn left, and DON’T WRECK”! The high speeds achieved, along with the thrills and spills of the sport have resulted in short track speed skating to sometimes be referred to as ‘NASCAR on ice’.

Think you have what it takes to be a speedskater?  Come out and give it a try.  Your first session is always free.  We only ask that you try to call us a few days in advance so that we can have a pair of skates on hand for you on the night that you plan to attend.  Please call Dan at (269) 720-1760 or Sam at (269) 760-7121.
