Selected in the 3rd round (91st overall) in the 2007 National Hockey League Draft, Sexsmith is in his first season as a professional. In eight games in Worcester, Sexsmith was 2-4-1 with a 4.00 goals-against-average.

Sexsmith played five season of junior hockey in the Western Hockey League, primarily with the Vancouver Giants. The native of Calgary, Alberta earned an incredible record 120-35-21 in the WHL with an astonishing 26 shutouts.

During the 2007-08 season, Sexsmith attended Team Canada’s National Junior Championship Development Camp. With Vancouver in that same season he led the league in GAA, minutes played and shutouts.
